Academic programs

At the Institute of Education, we offer a wide range of study programs, including undergraduate and graduate programs in education studies. At the Department of Vocational Education Studies, we provide degrees that prepare students to work in vocational schools, as well as doctoral programs that equip them for academic careers.

In our Bachelor's and Master's programs, students are required to combine a vocational subject with a general subject, in addition to vocational education studies. For the vocational and general subjects, they can choose from:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Automotive Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Home Economics
  • Nursing
  • Health
  •  Cosmetology
  • Social Pedagogy
  • Economics
  • English
  • German
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Theology (Protestant, Catholic, and Islamic)
  • Spanish
  • Physical Education

Usually, our students continue there Masters's with the same combination of subjects. After completing the Master's, our students are qualified to enter the preparatory service, enabling them for a career as teachers at vocational schools.

For students or applicants who completed a Bachelor with no focus on teaching or pedagogy, we offer a Master's degree specifically design for this target group. Osnabrück University was one of the first universites to offer such degrees in Lower Saxony, tackling the increasing shortage of teachers at vocational schools.

In our doctoral program, PhD students advance their studies by focusing on a research question related to vocational education. They are guided and supervised by our professors.
